Star Wars director JJ Abrams says he was moved to tears while filming in Ireland

Carl Kinsella

Speaking at a talk in Tribeca yesterday, JJ Abrams admitted that he was moved to tears while filming Star Wars Episode VII’s final scene on Kerry’s Skellig Michael.

(There are spoilers ahead but you should really have seen this movie by now.)

Abrams, speaking at the event, said that while filming the final scene where Rey meets Luke Skywalker in order to begin her Jedi training:

“I looked at [Mark Hamill] and I realised that he was the same age as Alec Guinness was when he played Obi Wan. I looked at him as the mist was clearing and I literally started to tear up.”

Reportedly, the Star Wars gang will be back to film in several locations across Ireland for Episode VIII, so let’s hope new director Rian Johnson has the Kleenex with him.
