iPhone users have been warned to watch out for a fake text message scam doing the rounds

Conor Heneghan

So far, only iPhone users in the UK appear to have been affected.

iPhone users have been warned to be wary of a fake text message phishing scam designed to glean Apple IDs and other personal information.

According to The Independent, iPhone users are being sent unsolicited messages purporting to have been sent from official Apple sources urging them to change their Apple ID before it expires.

While the text messages look fairly legitimate (even, as evident above, including the recipient’s name), they direct those who fall victim to the scam to a legitimate-looking website where they are asked to enter their username and password.

Victims are then told that their account has been locked for security reasons and are then asked to enter a host of additional personal information, including their credit card details.

Several people on Twitter have reported being targeted by the scam, while a phishing support page on the Apple website warns users to “never send credit card information, account passwords, or extensive personal information” unless they can fully verify from whom and where the request came.

Of course, exerting common sense is the best way to avoid falling victim to scams like this one; with the number of scammers and hackers present online, it pays to be vigilant.
