The new regulation for Netflix is good news for Irish users

JOE

Good news for fans of homegrown content.

Everyone loves a good Netflix binge, but unless you’re in the middle of a series you’re hooked on, you might find yourself scrolling through and struggling to find something you want to watch, or haven’t seen before.

You’ll often hear people say that the US version of Netflix has much more to offer in terms of choice but that’s all about to change.

According to the girls over at Her.ie, under new EU regulations all streaming services must include at least 20% local content.

Although these regulations mean that the content must be from Europe and not Ireland specifically, we’re still hoping they’ll include some of the brilliant work that has come out of Ireland in recent years.

Other streaming services like Amazon and iTunes will also have to dedicate at least 20% of their catalogue to EU content.

The Irish are a creative bunch and so there’s no shortage of great homegrown content to chose from.

Here are some the films and TV shows we are hoping they’ll add.

The Queen of Ireland

The uplifting story of Rory O’Neill, better known as drag queen Panti Bliss, in the lead up to the historic marriage equality referendum.

Waking Ned Devine

The hilarious story of lottery winner Ned Devine. When he dies from shock after winning the lottery, the people in the village agree Ned would want them to benefit from his good luck. They then come up with a crazy scheme to claim the ticket.

Love/Hate

The hugely popular gritty crime drama based on Dublin’s criminal underworld.

War of the Buttons.

The story of an epic battle between the children of Ballydowse and Carrickdowse.
