Link found between waistline and chances of aggressive cancer

Carl Kinsella

People who have a larger waistline are putting themselves at a higher risk of developing an aggressive form of prostate cancer, according to scientists at the University of Oxford.

Researchers claimed that their data suggests every 10cm increase in waistline corresponds to an 18% increase in the risk of fatal prostate cancer in men. 10cm translates to roughly four inches.

The study surveyed for that 140,000 men with a mean age of 52 across eight countries over fourteen years. According to the Irish Times, roughly 7,000 incidences of prostate cancer were found – 934 for of which turned out to be fatal.

The study suggests that shedding weight on the waist, like a beer belly, is a crucial step that men can take in reducing their risk of life-threatening illness.

There are roughly 3000 cases of prostate cancer recorded in Ireland each year.
