This is a commentator’s dream.
The Euros will offer football fans all over the continent the chance to prove to their mates just how knowledgeable they are about football and if you’d like to be one of those football buffs holding court down the pub, UEFA have a guide that will come in very handy.
Imagine, for example, not only being able to namecheck the Hungary front two or the Albanian third-choice goalkeeper but being able to back that up with a note-perfect pronunciation of said names?
That is usually the preserve of football commentators alone, but UEFA.com’s team of reporters have helped compile a quite marvellous guide to getting the players’ names right.
Perhaps surprisingly, only two Irish names feature on the list – central defenders Richard Keogh (Kee-oh) and Ciaran (Key-ron) Clark; they obviously think most football fans know enough about Seamus Coleman to know how to pronounce his first name.
Fair play to Uefa, it really is a fantastic guide that they’ve put together and you can check it out in full here; we certainly don’t envy the commentators working on Romania v Albania on June 19.
