Top Garda says the good behaviour of Irish fans is making job very easy

Alan Loughnane

The best fans in the world.

While some of Euro 2016 has been marred by violent clashes among some fans and ultras, the behaviour of the Irish fans has come in for praise.

Garda Superintendent Gerry Delmar is over in France with a team of eight Gardaí for the tournament and has had positive things to say about the Irish contingent over there.

The Irish fans are well known for their jubilant atmosphere at tournaments and are proving a hit with fans from other countries.

According to the Irish Times, Supt Delmar said: “The Irish fans – they’re very, very popular. We can see it here with them. They’re very popular throughout Europe. Over here they’ve been very, very well received.

“They’re very, very well behaved. They’re mingling with fans from other countries, and they’re getting on fine, so it certainly makes our work very, very easy over here.”

“They’re soaking up the atmosphere, they’re mingling with other fans, they’re enjoying themselves and they’re not causing any problems whatsoever,” he said.

It’s reassuring to hear that despite all the antisocial behaviour problems during Euros, the Irish fans aren’t proving an obstacle for police over there.

They’re happier to have a sing-song with a group of Croatian supporters in the fan zone.
