During a recent trip to Co. Down, I was somewhat surprised that a very popular term for kissing was unknown in The Mourne County.
With this in mind, we’ve decided to take a look at some of the funny, colourful and interesting terms that Irish people use to describe kissing. We’re all so smooth in the 32 counties.
Shift
Context: “I swear to God. I’ll shift anyone that talks to me”.
Wear
Context: “I didn’t see her all night. She was too busy wearing the face off her fella”.
Mauling
Context: “Sure it was hard to miss them. They were mauling each other in the corner”.
Meet
Context: “Come here to me. Would you meet my mate?”.
Lob the gob
Context: “Want my advice? At the first available opportunity, just lob the gob”.
Score
Context: “I’m absolutely delighted with myself. I finally scored him last night”.
Stick the head in
Context: “Things were going really well between us. Lots of craic, laughs and fun, so I decided to just stick the head in and it worked out well”.
Go off with
Context: “I didn’t see him all night. Sure he went off with yer wan”.
Numerous others
We’ve heard the terms ‘swapping spits’, ‘mugging’, ‘making out’, ‘tonsil hockey’, ‘smooching’ and ‘go with’ all used before. We’re such a nation of smooth talkers. Let us know if you have a favourite.
