We really hope that our run doesn’t come to an end tonight.
It wasn’t as if we didn’t already know that Ireland fans have an enduring capacity to bring the craic wherever they go – but the proliferation of social media and instant-sharing have really hammered home just how much fun it is for the fans in green when Ireland qualify for an international tournament.
Perhaps the most endearing element of the fun had by the Irish fans is that it’s not just the Irish fans who enjoy. In fact, sometimes we make sacrifices so the public can join in.
Take this man in Lille, for example, who has removed most of his clothes to jump into a fountain while a crowd gathers and sings football chants at him. He’s sacrificed his warmness and his dryness in order to make everybody else laugh. He’s a national hero, and he is cheered on as such by all and sundry.
Perhaps the most impressive part of this story is that the fountain was left in pristine condition (somehow) and is a regular pond of tranquility just hours later:
