“Naturally I care about all the details that go towards my overall performance.”
Irish Champion and 400m Hurdle record holder Thomas Barr gave us an insight into the professional approach he takes towards his training and racing as he prepares for Rio.
The Wellman® ambassador was named the World Student Games Champion in 2015; and is a five times Irish Champion. Based out of Limerick he trains six days per week throughout the year, with just a five week break to rejuvenate at the end of the season. This amounts to two sessions or 4 hours per day of high intensity speed, endurance and / or strength training – in the gym and out on the track.
“With the amount of work I do I need to make sure I am recovering between sessions – it’s when you are resting that you are adapting to the training you just did! Eating well is of course part of that recovery process. It’s also really important that I replace the nutrients I lose and Wellman® ensures I have optimum nutrition levels.
“It’s about having the energy to maintain high standards in training. The more energy you have the better the training session – the better the recovery – the better the performance in the end”
2016 is of course an important year for the Waterford man. His personal best of 48.65 is a number etched into his mind. The margins are small at international level so the marginal gains are sometimes the difference between medals and records or frustration.
Wellman® Original contains a comprehensive formulation of over 29 essential bio-elements, vitamins and minerals and has been specially developed for men who want to maintain optimum nutrition levels while training, who want to help support reproductive health, or help maintain general health and vitality in an otherwise hectic lifestyle and is available from pharmacies, health food stores & supermarkets nationwide.
