A Game of Thrones spin-off looks on the cards as the writers discuss the idea

Alan Loughnane

Do your best to remain calm…

Since it was revealed there’s only 13 episodes remaining in the hit series Game of Thrones, people have understandably, been crestfallen at the news.

But they’re probably more upset at the news that the next season on Game of Thrones has been delayed for an incredibly annoying reason… damn you winter.

But fans of the series need not worry too much, as the writers of the show David Benioff and D.B Weiss seem confident that there will be a spin-off of the series.

Speaking on the UFC Unfiltered podcast, Benioff and Weiss said: “One of the great things about what George [R.R. Martin] did is he didn’t just build a story, he built a world.”

“[There’s] so many characters and such a rich detailed history behind it that there are a lot of different ways you could go with it.”

But whether or not Weiss and Benioff are involved in such a spin-off is unclear at the moment as the pair still have to finish off their existing task of ending the current series… no easy feat.

“We just haven’t had time to really think through the details of [a spin-off series], because we’re so focused on just getting the show made,” they said.

“This is such a 24-hour-a-day job. Once we start thinking about it, we realise we have other things that are immediately pressing that we need to be thinking about.”

The idea does makes sense after all, movie companies have remade and produced sequels for years as they’re guaranteed to make money following the success of the original. It seems only natural that someone will want to capitalise on the reputation of the series by creating a similar one.

The possibilities for the spin-off series are endless, it could focus on a huge number of areas. A prequel seems likely at this stage focusing on the Mad King and his battles with Robert Baratheon and Ned Stark which eventually culminated in his death. Or else it could delve deeper into the origins of the White Walkers and their activity over the centuries.

Or, they could leave Westeros altogether and focus more on happenings across the narrow sea in one of the past, present or future.
