O’Reilly said he was given the supplement “by someone unrelated to his team or association”.
Irish boxer Michael O’Reilly has admitted unintentionally taking a supplement that may have contained a prohibited substance and will not compete at the Olympic Games.
RTE this evening reported a statement from O’Reilly’s legal representatives, in which he said that the supplement was given to him “by someone unrelated to his team or association”.
The 23-year old is believed to have disclosed that he had taken the supplement at the time of the test, which led to a violation of Olympic doping rules. News of the positive test emerged last Thursday, the day before the start of the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
O’Reilly apologised to his fellow boxers, team-mates, the Irish Athletic Boxing Association, Sport Ireland, the Olympic Council of Ireland and to all those who supported him.
