PICS: Couple rescued from deserted island after writing ‘SOS’ in the sand

It works, it actually works.

If television and movies have taught us anything, it’s that the first course of action for people who somehow find themselves stranded on deserted islands is to scrawl desperate cries for help in the sand.

It didn’t work for Tom Hanks in Castaway but, just this week, it did help the cause of a couple who had become stranded on East Fayu Island, a tiny atoll in the Federated States of Micronesia.

Not far from the middle of nowhere, basically.

The couple, Linus and Sabina Jack, both in their 50s, had a flashlight in their boat, which caught the attention of a search vessel on Wednesday night after a search and rescue mission had been launched by the US Embassy in Kolonia, the capital of Pohnpei State.

Having detected the flashlight, the Embassy directed a US Navy search aircraft to overfly East Fayu on Thursday morning and this is what it found…

As of Thursday afternoon, the search and rescue mission had been completed and Linus and Sabina were waiting on a ship to take them home.
