WATCH: The amazing lion v giraffe battle on Planet Earth 2 made for utterly compelling viewing

Conor Heneghan

Another week, another episode of jaw-dropping television from the BBC.

Accuse us of getting carried away if you must, but we’re not sure if there’s ever been a TV programme that has reached the levels of quality produced by Planet Earth 2 in recent weeks.

Every weekend, it has helped ease the Sunday night fear of millions of viewers with fascinating insights into the world around us.

Not only that, but every week has provided battle scenes between various species filmed in a style that wouldn’t look out of place in a Hollywood blockbuster, like the epic iguana v snake encounter in the first episode and the jaguar’s pursuit of the caiman last week.

On Sunday night, the focus was on a hungry pride of desert lionesses and their increasingly desperate search for a meal, which led to an attempt to corner, of all animals, a giraffe, to get some dinner.

The narrative (orchestrated in typically brilliant fashion by David Attenbrough) set the scene for a vicious end for the giraffe, whose path was being blocked by the lead female lioness, readying herself for the deadly blow.

And then this happened…

King of the Jungle, my ass.
