GALLERY: Turns out there’s competition for the most Christmassy house in Ireland

Conor Heneghan

The Christmas is strong with these folks.

Earlier today, we brought you images of a house in Cabra in Dublin that we confidently dubbed ‘the most Christmassy house in Ireland’ such was the spectacular display of lighting adorning the entire premises.

That was until we were sent word of houses in Carlow and Roscommon where the level of Christmas has been turned right up to 11 and, better yet, in both cases, there’s a charitable element involved.

In Cloonfad in Roscommon, Seamus Staunton has been lighting up his house every Christmas for over 20 years, first of all collecting money for the Mayo/Roscommon Hospice and, more recently, in light of the sad loss of a number of relatives and friends, for Cancer Care West.

Seamus’ son David reckons that approximately €70,000 has been raised over the years and the turning on of the lights attracts a big crowd in the locality ever year. It’s some effort to be fair.

In Bagenalstown in Carlow, meanwhile, Ger Doyle has also been turning his house into something of a winter wonderland in recent years, with the Carlow Kilkenny Homecare Team benefitting from donations raised in the process.

If you’re wondering why your local shop was all out of electronic figurines, we reckon it’s because Ger has them at his house. For more information, check out Doyle’s Christmas Lights Display on Facebook.

This is phenomenal…
