WATCH: The most awkward date of all time on next week’s First Dates

Kate Demolder

“We’ll get the awkward silence out of the way at the start.”

Tuesday, 6 February’s First Dates Ireland is set to be a terrific one – with potentially the most awkward sounding date of all time to be aired on Irish television.

First Dates Ireland pairs up unsuspecting singletons who’ve applied to be on the show with someone who could potentially be their perfect match.

Both parties are told to turn up at The Gibson Hotel in Dublin for a certain time, and are filmed meeting, eating and greeting for the very first time.

On Tuesday’s show we’ll meet Killian and Michelle who hail from Cork and Donegal respectively. The pair meet at the bar where conversation begins and ends flowing within the first 40 seconds.

Then, the silences begin…

Killian, upon realising the awkwardness, pulls out this cracker: “No point, you know, in being at home looking at the four walls when you can be out with a fantastic looking specimen as myself.”

While Michelle coyly laughs, Killian hits back with: “That’s a joke, by the way.”

You know it’s bad when you have to explain that it’s a joke you’ve just told…

The date goes from bad to worse when the paid embark on their first awkward silence of the night, one minute in.

We certainly hope this meeting gets better than this initial awkwardness, but we can’t say that we’re entirely hopeful.

The next episode of First Dates airs at 9.30pm on Tuesday night on RTÉ 2.
