Absolutely gripping. You’ll be watching this.
If you’ve ever seen Friday Night Lights – and we urge every single person in the world to do so – you’ll be firmly of the opinion that Connie Britton (Tami Taylor) is a gift to the world.
Aside from charming us all in the beloved show, Britton has carved out an incredibly impressive career with performances in the likes of Nashville, American Horror Story, The West Wing and 24 to name but a few.
Well, in her next role, the talented actress is going into darker territory because she’ll be starring in the adaptation of a beloved true crime podcast that has gripped everyone that has listened to it.
Dirty John is based on Los Angeles Times reporter Chris Goffard’s reporting and John Meehan and his relationship with Debra Newell.
As per the official synopsis: “Debra Newell is a successful interior designer. She meets John Meehan, a handsome man who seems to check all the boxes: attentive, available, just back from a year in Iraq with Doctors Without Borders. But her family doesn’t like John, and they get entangled in an increasingly complex web of love, deception, forgiveness, denial, and ultimately, survival.”
Goffard first heard of Meehan when he learned that the police were investigating a possible murder in Newport Beach. The podcast is primarily focused on the themes of abuse and manipulation, as well as the behaviours of those being abused.
Since being released, the podcast has spent over three weeks at the top of the US iTunes podcast charts and it was downloaded over 10 million times within 6 weeks of release.
In terms of the TV show, as stated by The Hollywood Reporter, the creators will “explore how Newell’s romance with Meehan spiraled into secrets, deception, denial and, ultimately, survival — with shocking ramifications for not just her, but her children as well.”
Aside from Britton, Eric Bana (Black Hawk Down, Hulk) will star as John Meehan with Jean Smart and Juno Temple co-starring.
The series will premiere on Bravo in the U.S. before Netflix air the series in international markets. At present, no premiere date has been given but this has the potential to be absolutely incredible.
