It’s the Bank Holiday weekend.
And there’s really only one way to celebrate.
No, not by going out and losing the run of ourselves.
No, not by voting for who should enjoy the role of President for the next seven years – but you really should also do that, it only takes about three minutes.
But of course, we refer to staying in and watching a bunch of movies that happen to be on the television on this Friday 26 October.
Get involved…
X-Men: First Class – E4 – 9pm
The first outing for McAvoy, Fassbender and Lawrence sees friends become rivals as the battle for mutant rights threatens to become an all-out war.
War of the Worlds – Virgin Media One – 9pm
Arguably kind of underrated, this one.
Yep, Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of a classic science fiction tale pulls its punches in the end in that all-too-familiar Steven Spielberg way, but there’s much here to admire.
First off, War of the Worlds 2005 looks terrific and manages to capture a sense of widespread panic by keeping the action quite intimate throughout.
Tom Cruise is on top form in a rare role where he’s not the coolest, smartest guy in the room, while Tim Robbins gives good creep in a memorable near-cameo.
Step Brothers – Comedy Central – 9pm
You know this one so well you should probably ace our quiz, while you’re at it.
The Conjuring – ITV 2 – 9pm
The Warrens battle terrifying evil for the first time. It goes well. Kind of.
The Visit – Film 4 – 9pm
M Night Shyamalan pulled off his greatest twist yet here; managing to somehow resurrect a career that seemed to be comfortably six feet under.
The Visit has problems, but as a lo-fi punk comeback it boasts enough charm.
Blair Witch – Film 4 – 10.50pm
Another scary movie, you say? Halloween is definitely right around the corner.
In truth, Blair Witch is a disappointment. Having impressed with You’re Next and The Guest, director Adam Wingard seemed like the perfect choice to breathe life back into the 1999 horror phenomenon.
Alas, he gets bogged down in a script that can’t decide if it’s a remake, reboot, sequel or its own thing. In the end, it’s all of those, but there are some strong individual moments when it all goes south.
Creepshow – Film 4 – 12.45am
A knowing, darkly comic horror anthology that manages to delight and despair in equal measure.
Private Benjamin – RTÉ 2 – 12.45am
Goldie Hawn was arguably never better than she was here as her privileged life gets majorly turned upside down with amusing character-building consequences.
