Movies & TV

Here are the 8 best movies on TV this Saturday

Dave Hanratty

Saturday, am I right?

The Bank Holiday is in full swing, your bank account is probably a little lighter, your head a touch the worse for wear.

Turn the TV on. It’s all about the Presidential election results. Exciting.

But not quite as exciting as eight movies to choose from if you’re chilling out at home for the night.

Here’s your lot on this Saturday 27 October…

Clueless – Comedy Central – 6pm

It looks like Hollywood has Clueless in the remake sights, and while everyone is making the same gag that there’s no reason recast Paul Rudd as he looks the same age, here’s a reminder of how good this movie is.

Easily dismissed as a standard mid-90s superficial teen vehicle, Clueless is a good successor to Heathers (though considerably less murderous) and a great companion to Mean Girls.

As with those movies, the Alicia Silverstone-led comedy is sharp, knowing and has a decent heart buried deep down.

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King – ITV 2 – 6.40pm

Because it wouldn’t be Saturday on ITV 2 without a Lord of the Rings film.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon – Channel 4 – 7pm

The third instalment of the retina-bothering ‘Michael Bay smashes robots around’ series that is Transformers might be the weirdest of the bunch.

Seriously, if you stop and really break this one down it gets very bizarre and unusually dark for what is essentially supposed to be a summer blockbuster for children.

By the end of Dark of the Moon, noble hero Optimus Prime becomes a full-blown ruthless executioner, ignoring the desperate cries of other robots as they openly beg for their life.

It’s weird, guys.

Fast & Furious 6 – E4 – 9pm

Because it wouldn’t be Saturday on E4 without a Fast and the Furious movie.

World War Z – Film 4 – 9pm

Everyone and their mother says that World War Z is a mess.

Granted, the making of this one is quite fascinating given just how many changes it went through before, during and even after shooting, but Brad Pitt gives it his all and some of the scares are decent.

Look, it’s slim pickings out there tonight guys, I did my best.

Interstellar – RTÉ 2 – 9.05pm

Here we go.

Christopher Nolan goes to space.

Matthew McConaughey gives arguably the finest performance of his career.

Hans Zimmer provides a world class score.

Michael Caine is really selfish.

A famous actor pops up halfway through and his stunt casting kind of hurts the movie.

The movie itself is good, sometimes very very good, but never the classic you want for it to be.

But that’s Nolan for you.

The Da Vinci Code – Universal TV – 9.40pm

People actually queued around corners outside cinemas for this night after night in 2006.

Pale Rider – ITV 4 – 11pm

Clint Eastwood on a horse. The perfect way to take a break from Red Dead Redemption II.
