Because you’re going to want to relax after the big day, right?
The madness, the mayhem, the outright chaos of Christmas Day is over for another year.
Sure, you still have a week of hopefully doing very little and indulging quite a bit to get through, and there’s a new year around the corner and you’ll want to see that in properly, too.
Along the way you will need a pit stop or three, and what better way to kick back and chill out than to watch a movie on the television?
It’s easy. Just pick one of the below options for this Stephen’s Day 2018 and enjoy…
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban – RTÉ 2 – 3.25pm
Many have argued that the third adventure in the Harry Potter series is the very best.
Mrs Doubtfire – Channel 4 – 5.45.pm
Robin Williams in one of his many iconic roles with Pierce Brosnan in support.
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire – RTÉ 2 – 5.50pm
Potter fans also tend to like this Quidditch-inflected outing that features a young Robert Pattinson before the whole Twilight thing made him a big star.
Zootopia – RTÉ One – 6.35pm
Animals as police in wacky animated family-friendly romp.
Non-Stop – Film 4 – 6.55pm
Liam Neeson is an alcoholic detective or something on a plane and it all goes wrong when he suspects terrorism is afoot. Bad, but fun bad.
Life of Pi – E4 – 8pm
Ang Lee directs a masterclass in restraint in this poetic and poignant survival tale that boasts one of the best-looking CGI tigers you’ll ever see until they improve the technology in a few years if they haven’t already done that.
Quantum of Solace – ITV – 8pm
It’s not that bad!
Home Alone 2: Lost in New York – 4 Seven – 8.20pm
In which Kevin McAllister tries to commit actual murder.
The Commitments – Virgin Media One – 9pm
An out-and-out Irish classic.
Bridesmaids – ITV2 – 9pm
Smart comedy that made a deserved star out of Kristin Wiig.
Lucy – Film 4 – 9pm
Luc Besson goes full Luc Besson as Scarlett Johansson becomes a super-assassin that also might be a computer. This one’s weird.
Goodfellas – TCM – 9pm
Fairly beloved gangster classic.
Ant-Man – RTÉ 2 – 9.35pm
Worth it entirely for Michael Peña’s motormouth comedy skills.
The Magnificent Seven – RTÉ One – 9.50pm
A western worthy of the superlative in its name.
Bad Boys – Comedy Central – 10pm
Shit just got real.
Jaws – ITV – 10pm
Shark takes full advantage of local mayor’s incompetence.
Love Actually – ITV – 10.20pm
Tis the season.
Not everyone loves this film, you know…
In fact, some people have made other very good arguments about it.
The Green Mile – Channel 4 – 11pm
Tom Hanks and the late Michael Clarke Duncan shine in this tear-jerking Stephen King prison-based adaptation.
