30th Dec 2018

Here are the 17 best movies on TV this Sunday

Dave Hanratty

Sunday.

That’s what day it is.

Sunday 30 December, to be precise. Nearly there now, 2018 almost in the rear-view mirror.

But first, some further movie options on the television on this night.

And there’s LOTS of them so let’s dive on in…

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey – RTÉ 2 – 5.30pm

Not as good as the Lord of the Rings trilogy, but if you’re into that world you could do worse.

Paddington – Channel 4 – 5.40pm

You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll love.

Jurassic World – ITV2 – 5.40pm

How to revive a 90s franchise and make a disgraceful amount of money in the process.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon – E4 – 7pm

None of the Michael Bay Transformers movies are strictly ‘good’ in any real sense of the word, but you have to give him credit for spending so much money and time destroying a city in this one.

Seriously, the major battle here is a far superior spectacle to the highly similar one that the first Avengers movie served up.

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel – More 4 – 7pm

Charming enough comedy to watch with the parents.

Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens – ITV – 8pm

Yes, it’s basically a remake of A New Hope. Pretty good one, though.

Cliffhanger – Virgin Media Three – 9pm

Sylvester Stallone and John Lithgow face off in the mountains in a trash classic.

Kingsman: The Secret Service – Film 4 – 9pm

Colin Firth and Taron Egerton kick off an x-rated spy franchise.

The Fugitive – TCM – 9pm

Harrison Ford on the run.

In the Heart of the Sea – RTÉ 2 – 9.30pm

Chris Hemsworth and Cillian Murphy get wet.

The Silence of the Lambs – ITV4 – 10pm

Anthony Hopkins shines in his most iconic role.

Pulp Fiction – Comedy Central – 10pm

Pulp Fiction definitely has plenty of wit and dark humour, but Comedy Central, really?

Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation – Virgin Media Two – 11pm

The best entry in the Mission: Impossible series until Fallout came along this year and violently knocked it off its perch.

Sleepy Hollow – SyFy – 11.10pm

The kind of macabre mayhem that Tim Burton was born to make.

War of the Worlds – BBC One – 11.45pm

Tom Cruise again, this time far less dashing and cool as a troubled father caught up in an extraterrestrial crisis.

The Woman in Black – Channel 4 – 12.05am

Daniel Radcliffe updates a vintage horror for a new generation.

30 Days of Night – Film 4 – 1.45am

If you’re having an especially late night, this ultra-brutal and bloody vampire thriller boasts Josh Hartnett, Ben Foster and some occasionally beautiful cinematography.
