Here are the 8 best movies on the telly today

Rory Cashin

We’ve survived another January weekend. Celebrate that with a movie or two on the couch.

While we may have endured that weather warning this weekend, things are still looking pretty bleak for the week ahead.

Best to stay wrapped up nice and warm with a movie. You could head to the cinema to check out one of the new releases there (check out our reviews for them all here), or you could sit in and enjoy one or more of these instead:

SUNDAY 27 JANUARY

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey – ITV2 – 5.45pm

The first of the Lord Of The Rings prequels is still a lot of fun, with Martin Freeman front and centre as the Hobbit who might be the key to saving the Shire and the rest of New Zealand as we know it.

X2 – FilmFour – 6.25pm

The second (and best?) of the X-Men movies sees Wolverine facing off against an old enemy, triggered by an attack on the X-Mansion itself.

Sin City – Syfy – 10.00pm

Director Robert Rodriguez brings a style tsunami to this graphic novel adaptation featuring an all-star cast (Bruce Willis, Rosario Dawson, Mickey Rourke, Clive Owen, Jessica Alba, Benicio Del Toro, Elijah Wood and loads more besides) and more violence than you’ll know what to do with.

The Boy In The Stripped Pajamas – BBC Two – 10.30pm

Adaptation of a multi-award winning novel set in a concentration camp during WWII, it focuses on the budding friendship between two young boys, one on each side of a fence that separates them.

Free Fire – FilmFour – 11.40pm

An incredible cast – Brie Larson, Cillian Murphy, Armie Hammer, Sharlto Copley, Jack Reynor – find themselves inside an abandoned warehouse for guns deal that goes spectacularly sideways, resulting in one huge firefight and a everyone simply trying to survive the night.

Unknown – ITV4 – 12.05am

Another entry in the subgenre of Liam Neeson Gets Revenge For Things. In this one, he wakes up from a coma and discovers another man has completely taken over his life, and not even his wife seems to remember who he is.

Promised Land – Channel 4 – 12.15am

Matt Damon, Frances McDormand, and John Krasinski star in this powerful drama about a salesman for a natural gas company who experiences a major life change when he sees the aftermath his company has on small towns in the States.

Let Me In – Syfy – 12.30am

Chloe Grace Moretz plays a young vampire girl who befriends her young neighbour Kodi Smith-McPhee, but their friendship could mean huge trouble for them both in this bleak horror drama.
