Movies.
Long form entertainment, often packed with familiar faces.
Characters in peril, or in love, or just having a laugh.
The cinematic medium contains many twists, turns, adventures and more.
You know what a movie is, let’s cut the foreplay.
Here are the very best selections on your television screen this Friday 1 March…
The Cable Guy – Universal TV – 8pm
Jim Carrey reached ‘backlash’ mode with this dark comedy, but it’s honestly quite clever and funny throughout.
The Fast and the Furious – ITV2 – 9pm
Where the world’s most unlikeliest franchise super-success was born.
Central Intelligence – Film 4 – 9pm
The Rock gives it his all once again in a decent, occasionally violent knockabout comedy.
The Expendables 2 – Virgin Media One – 10pm
The good one.
In the Name of the Father – RTÉ 2 – 10.05pm
Daniel Day-Lewis and the late Pete Postlethwaithe shine in Jim Sheridan’s gripping account of the Guildford Four.
Guardians of the Galaxy – BBC One – 11.05pm
Star-Lord, Drax, Groot, Rocket and Gamora take on the universe.
La La Land – BBC Two – 11.05pm
Ryan Gosling. Emma Stone. Dancing.
The Usual Suspects – ITV4 – 11pm
Have to feel like watching this film is going to become problematic soon enough, if it isn’t already. Hell of a twist, though.
True Lies – Film 4 – 11.10pm
Arnie rides a horse through a hotel and other such wild escapades.
Weekend at Bernie’s – Virgin Media One – 11.55pm
Ah, the 1980s. A time when you could make not just one film in which a corpse is dragged around for comedic purposes for not just one entire film, but two.
Oldboy – Channel 4 – 12.45am
Not the exceptional South Korean mystery thriller from 2003, but rather the woeful 2013 American re-do courtesy of Spike Lee, Josh Brolin and Elizabeth Olsen.
Oldboy 2013 is a bad joke, and so it’s only worth watching for the cringe factor. That, or you could watch this excellent compare-and-contrast YouTube takedown instead:

The Raid – Film 4 – 1.55am
Having a late night? Settle in with one of the best action films ever made.
