Here are the 5 best movies on TV tonight

Rory Cashin

Pretty eclectic mix tonight, it must be said.

It can sometimes be tough to believe that anything else exists in the world right now other than Game Of Thrones and Avengers: Endgame.

But there are other things to watch and enjoy.

For example, one or more of the following movies on TV tonight:

MONDAY 29 APRIL

Beverly Hills Cop – Sky One – 9pm

We start off with a movie that was originally intended as a big action movie for Sylvester Stallone, before he passed on it, and it became a career-making action-comedy starring Eddie Murphy. It features a scene where he stays in a swanky, five-star hotel that charges him $250 for the night, which is really a nightmare vision for how bad inflation was to get in the following few decades.

Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit – FilmFour – 9pm

Following in the footsteps of Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, and Ben Affleck (but before John Krasinski took over on Amazon Prime), we get Chris Pine as the upcoming special agent who gets drawn into a political game of cat-and-mouse with bad guy Kenneth Branagh (who also directs here). A decent, if forgettable action thriller.

Little Miss Sunshine – TG4 – 9.30pm

An incredible cast – Steve Carrell, Toni Collette, Greg Kinnear, Paul Dano, Alan Arkin, and Abigail Breslin – star in this comedy drama about a family who will stop at nothing to drive to their young daughter’s beauty pageant on the other side of America. You will laugh. You will cry.

Anomalisa – FilmFour – 11.10pm

One of the best movies of the last five years that pretty much nobody has seen, it is a stop-motion animated movie about a man who is fed up with the mediocrity of his life and decides to do something about it. It comes from the genius behind Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind, Adaptation, and Being John Malkovich, so you’d best prepare your mind for that.

First Blood – ITV4 – 11.45pm

And we end with a movie that was originally intended for Al Pacino, but ended up going to Stallone. Circle of life! He plays an army vet who is hunted by local police into the woods, and he uses his skills to survive and fight back.

It’ll prove a good watch ahead of Rambo V: Last Blood, due out before the end of 2019.
