Here are the 5 best movies on TV today

Rory Cashin

A very decent selection tonight!

Some nights the movies on TV are pretty good.

Some nights, let us be honest, they aren’t great.

Thankfully, tonight, the selection is well above average, and covering the bases of everything from romantic comedies to action movies to tear-jerking dramas.

Enjoy!

THURSDAY 25 JULY

The Proposal – Comedy Central – 9pm

Ryan Reynolds is the personal assistant to the boss from hell, played by Sandra Bullock, but when she finds out that she could be deported from America and lose her incredible job because she is a Canadian citizen, she blackmails him into faking a marriage so she can stay. And guess what? They start to fall in love! A very cute rom-com, thanks mostly to the great chemistry of the two leads.

Mechanic: Resurrection – FilmFour – 9pm

Master assassin Jason Statham is forced out of retirement when a bad guy kidnaps the woman he loves (Jessica Alba) and forces him to kill a list of people and make them all look like accidents. Co-stars Tommy Lee Jones and  Michelle Yeoh, it is all highly ridiculous, but in a real turn-brain-off-and-just-have-fun kind of way.

The Fountain – Syfy – 9pm

Hugh Jackman is a man trying to find a cure for his wife Rachel Weisz’s fatal disease, and we see this story play out in modern times, in the distant past, and an eye-popping future. An incredibly powerful time-hopping love story with one of the best scores of all time. Not for everyone, mind.

The Nice Guys – ITV4 – 10.55pm

Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe are two detectives who find themselves caught up in an incredibly complicated murder plot in this comedy-action-thriller from the guy behind Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Truth be told, it is kind of great to see Gosling loosen up, because he does hapless-comedy scenes fantastically well.

Arachnophobia – Comedy Central – 11.15pm

We’re not quite sure why this movie is on Comedy Central, as we have some very specific memories of this movie absolutely traumatising us when we were younger. Jeff Daniels, John Goodman, and Julian Sands star in this “comedy”(?) about a small town overrun with a new species of poisonous spiders.
