Spoiled for choice tonight.
Knowing that nobody is happy about being “back to reality”, Monday evening’s TV has done us a solid by giving us a serious amount of considerably decent movies to enjoy.
There are also some not-so-good movies too, should you just need to turn your brain off for a bit…
MONDAY 26 AUGUST
Captain America: The First Avenger – ITV2 – 6.35pm
Chris Evans would go on to have bigger and better sequels, but this old school actioner did a good job of setting up the do-gooder hero that we would all go on to know and love. It also introduced us to Bucky Barnes, who will soon be getting his own Disney+ show.
Knight & Day – Film4 – 6.50pm
Tom Cruise plays an unpredictable secret agent who ends up dragging complete stranger Cameron Diaz along for an international ride of action and intrigue in this entertaining-if-silly romantic comedy thriller. ALL of the genres!
Hacksaw Ridge – RTE Two – 9pm
Mel Gibson directs this true story of a soldier (played by Andrew Garfield) who decides to fight for his country in WWII, but refuses to pick up a weapon due to his religious beliefs, which proves to potentially be problematic when he is sent to take part in the now-historic the Battle of Okinawa.
Goldeneye – ITV4 – 9pm
Pierce Brosnan’s first and best outing as 007 finds him going up against a former fellow Double-O agent.
Kingsman: The Secret Service – Film4 – 9pm
The first and better of the Kingsman movies, before next year’s prequel arrives.
Faster – Virgin Media One – 9pm
The Rock goes violent in this revenge thriller, in which he plans to take out a series of criminals who killed his brother and set him up for the murder, while Billy Bob Thornton is the detective trying to catch him before his completes his mission.
White House Down – Sky One – 9pm
Channing Tatum again, this time in full Die Hard mode, protecting President Jamie Foxx when the White House is attacked and taken over by a group of terrorists. Not as fun as the other Die Hard-in-The White House movie Olympus Has Fallen, but still enjoyable.
Doom – Syfy – 10pm
The Rock again, this time as a space soldier (just go with it) who is sent to Mars when a portal is opened and a group of evil alien monsters begin to invade the planet. Karl Urban and Rosamund Pike complete the cast of people who are too talented to be in something this bad, but it just bad enough to be mined for fun.
Sing Street – Film4 – 11.40pm
Irish comedy drama set in the 1980s, telling the story of a teenager who wants to become the next great thing in music. Properly funny, properly romantic, and with some actual properly brilliant songs. Highly recommended.
