13th Aug 2021

One of the best historical dramas of the last 10 years is among the movies on TV tonight

Stephen Porzio

This 2012 film won three Oscars, including Best Picture.

At long last, the weekend is finally here. And for those who want to kick back on the sofa tonight with a good movie, we’ve got just the thing…

Here’s a list of the best films airing on TV this evening.

The Eagle – Film Four – 9pm

In Roman-ruled Britain, a young Roman soldier endeavours to honour his father’s memory by finding his lost legion’s golden emblem.

Starring Channing Tatum and Jamie Bell, this 2011 flick is a pleasantly old-school adventure film.

Taken 2 – ITV 4 – 9pm

Liam Neeson stars as a man with a particular set of skills again. A big step down from the original but the Northern Irish legend still adds some gravitas.

Let Me In – Horror Channel – 9pm

A bullied young boy (Kodi Smit-McPhee) befriends a young female vampire (Chloë Grace Moretz) who lives in secrecy with her guardian (Richard Jenkins).

Directed by Matt Reeves, who’s making the Robert Pattinson-starring Batman movie, this is a well-acted, handsome if slightly redundant remake of the Swedish film Let the Right One In.

Argo – RTÉ One – 9.35pm

In our pick for this evening, a CIA agent (director Ben Affleck) launches a dangerous operation to rescue six Americans in Tehran during the U.S. hostage crisis in Iran in 1979 under the guise of filming a science fiction film.

Partly an exciting and tense hostage thriller, partly a hilarious Hollywood satire, Oscar best picture winner Argo is an excellent entry in the “You won’t believe this actually happened” sub-genre of movies.

It also features a great cast including Alan Arkin, Bryan Cranston and John Goodman.

The Peanut Butter Falcon – BBC One – 10.35pm

This acclaimed comedy-drama follows a young man with Down Syndrome (Zack Gottsagen) who escapes from an assisted living facility and befriends a wayward fisherman on the run (Shia LaBeouf).

Released in 2019, The Peanut Butter Falcon was a sleeper hit, grossing over $23 million on a $6.2 million budget.

Lake Placid – Horror Channel – 11.15pm

In this very fun 1999 creature flick, three people (including Ireland’s Brendan Gleeson) attempt to stop a gigantic crocodile, who is terrorising residents in Maine.

Layer Cake – Film Four – 11.15pm

Before he was 007, Daniel Craig made a big impression in this slick crime thriller about a drug dealer who gets two tough assignments from his boss on the eve of his planned early retirement.
