There’s a lot of great offerings on the box this evening for movie lovers.
Staying in this Saturday evening? Not to worry, as JOE has compiled a list of the best movies on TV tonight.
And you shouldn’t be stuck for choice as there’s plenty of great options.
Let’s get into it.
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring – Sky Showcase – 8.10pm
The first in Peter Jackson’s iconic fantasy trilogy.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi – RTÉ2 – 8.50pm
An ambitious but divisive entry in the legendary space opera franchise.
Miami Vice – Turner Classic Movies – 9pm
This cinematic reboot of the classic 80’s series saw the show’s executive producer Michael Mann, also known for making classic crime thriller Heat, return to direct.
Starring Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx as a pair of detectives who go undercover to fight drug traffickers, it received mixed reviews upon release in 2006, perhaps because audiences and critics were taken aback by its notably more gloomy and haunted vibe than its TV predecessor.
That said, it’s gone on to be seen as a real cult favourite, thanks to its early use of digital cameras which bring viewers closer to its explosive action, its jargon-heavy yet quotable script and its surprising emotional depth.
Fighting with My Family – Film Four – 9pm
This biographical sports comedy-drama depicts the career of English professional wrestler Paige (the great Florence Pugh) as she makes her way up to WWE.
Written and directed by Stephen Merchant and featuring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson playing himself, this 2019 film was a hit with both audiences and critics.
Portrait of a Lady on Fire – BBC Four – 9pm
Looking for an emotionally transcending experience? If so, this absolutely stunning French historical romantic drama is for you.
Mission: Impossible – Fallout – Channel 4 – 9.10pm
For my money, the best of the Tom Cruise-starring action franchise.
Rain Man – TG4 – 10.35pm
Speaking of Cruise, he stars with Dustin Hoffman in this Oscar Best Picture winner.
Doomsday – Horror Channel – 10.45pm
Escape from New York meets Mad Max… in Scotland. What more could you want?
War for the Planet of the Apes – Film Four – 11.15pm
Woody Harrelson joins the cast for the third and so far final entry in the Planet of the Apes reboot series.
Con Air – ITV 4 – 11.20pm
“Put… the bunny… back… in the box.”
Blazing Saddles – RTÉ2 – 11.35pm
An iconic black comedy western from Mel Brooks.
Pawn Sacrifice – BBC One – 12.15am
Tobey Maguire is famous chess player Bobby Fischer in this well-reviewed biopic.
