Choose life. Choose movies.
It may not be the weekend yet but you can still chill on the sofa with a fine movie.
Here’s the best of what’s on the box on Thursday evening (9 December)…
Deadpool 2 – Film4 – 9pm
Josh Brolin and Zazie Beetz are among the fun additions to the Deadpool franchise in this bigger if slightly overstuffed sequel.
The Manchurian Candidate – BBC Four – 9pm
Frank Sinatra stars in this iconic psychological political thriller from the ’60s which was later remade with Denzel Washington.
Escape Plan – Syfy – 9pm
Action heavyweights Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone play characters who must team up to break out of the world’s most secret and secure prison.
Total Recall – ITV4 – 9pm
Speaking of Arnie, he leads the cast of this futuristic sci-fi action classic from Paul Verhoeven, playing an Earth-based construction worker with a hidden past.
Dead Ringers – Horror Channel – 9pm
Jeremy Irons gives one of the best performances ever playing twin gynecologists who take full advantage of the fact that nobody can tell them apart until their relationship begins to deteriorate over a woman.
Horror legend David Cronenberg directs.
Bad Teacher – E! Entertainment – 9pm
Cameron Diaz is the titular bad teacher.
Das Boot – Turner Classic Movies – 11.15pm
This German WWII drama set on a submarine is widely considered as being one of the best war films of all time.
Trainspotting – Film4 – 11.20pm
Our pick for tonight centers on Renton (Ewan McGregor), a young man deeply immersed in the Edinburgh drug scene who tries to get clean, despite the allure of drugs and the influence of friends.
An energetic, excellently soundtracked adaptation of Irvine Welsh’s novel of the same name by director Danny Boyle, Trainspotting perfectly captures the thrill of being young and hanging out with your mates, while at the same time presenting an honest, hard-hitting look at heroin addiction.
Atomic Blonde – TG4 – 12.05am
Focusing on an undercover MI6 agent (Charlize Theron) sent to Berlin during the Cold War to investigate a murder, Atomic Blonde’s bone-crunching action set-pieces and unique setting more than make up for its muddled story.
