A new month.
Will it be the same old movies on TV?
Will the schedule gods shine upon us?
These are the questions.
And here, for today at least, are the answers.
Here’s how it looks on the box on Tuesday, 1 February…
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen – Film4 – 6.50pm
A well-intentioned but ultimately disastrous superhero flick that effectively spelled the end of Sean Connery’s career, so upset was he by the experience.
Last Man Standing – Turner Classic Movies – 9pm
Stoic mobster Bruce Willis posts up at a lonely Texas town during the prohibition era and finds himself on both sides of a violent turf war.
Christopher Walken is also involved, which is always welcome.
Finding Your Feet – Film4 – 9pm
Imelda Staunton shines in a charming romantic comedy.
Hitsville: The Making of Motown – Sky Showcase – 11pm
A 2019 documentary that looks at the birth and rise of Motown music in 1950s America, featuring rare performances and plenty of archive footage.
Run All Night – TCM – 11.05pm
Our main pick on, let’s be honest, a not amazing Tuesday night of movies.
Liam Neeson runs a late-night gauntlet in a bid to keep his son out of the hands of vengeful gangsters.
Joel Kinnaman, Ed Harris and Common co-star.
Nuns on the Run – Film4 – 11.15pm
Small-time crooks Eric Idle and Robbie Coltrane get back in the habit.
The Void – Horror Channel – 12.40am
Decent Lovecraftian horror set in a seemingly doomed hospital.
Elle – Film4 – 1.05am
Paul Verhoven’s rape-revenge drama is certainly not for the faint-hearted but Isabelle Huppert’s central performance is absolutely astonishing.
