Movies & TV

04th Feb 2022

One of the best Westerns of the past few years is among the movies on TV tonight

Stephen Porzio

It is loosely based on the life of Ned Kelly.

Alas, the weekend is finally here.

And for those not going out tonight, there’s plenty of movies on the box this Friday.

Here’s your options.

The Untouchables – Film4 – 9pm

Sean Connery won an Oscar for his supporting role in this Prohibition-era set crime thriller, also starring Kevin Costner and Robert De Niro.

Miami Vice – Turner Classic Movies – 9pm

Writer-director Michael Mann helms this supremely underrated cinematic reboot of the ’80s TV show he executive produced featuring Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx in the lead roles.

Die Hard 2 – ITV4 – 9pm

The one in the airport.

The 6th Day – Horror Channel – 9pm

In this sci-fi, Arnold Schwarzenegger plays a man who meets a clone of himself and stumbles into a grand conspiracy.

Bad Teacher – Virgin Media One – 9pm

Cameron Diaz is the titular bad teacher.

Das Boot – True Movies – 9pm

This German WWII drama set on a submarine is widely considered as being one of the best war films of all time.

Passengers – RTÉ2 – 10.15pm

Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence star in this spaceship-set sci-fi.

True History of the Kelly Gang – Film4 – 11.20pm

Our pick for tonight is based on the acclaimed 2000 novel of the same name and is a fictionalised retelling of Australian outlaw Ned Kelly’s life, who is played by George MacKay (1917).

Boasting beautifully stark cinematography, an electrifying punk soundtrack and lots of gritty action set-pieces, True History of the Kelly Gang is a hard-hitting, visceral and at times, delightfully weird account of Kelly and his gang’s activities.

Also, the supporting cast is superb, including Charlie Hunnam, Essie Davis, Nicholas Hoult and a scene-stealing singing Russell Crowe.

Posse – Turner Classic Movies – 11.45pm

Another Western, this time directed by and starring Mario Van Peebles (New Jack City).

The Goldfinch – RTÉ One – 11.50pm

Irish director John Crowley (Brooklyn) tackles another much-loved novel.

Bad Neighbours 2 – Channel 4 – 12.10am

This solid comedy sequel adds Chloë Grace Moretz to the mix.
