An underrated war film is among the movies on TV tonight

Stephen Porzio

Jake Gyllenhaal stars in the 2005 drama.

Staying in this Saturday night?

Not to worry as there are plenty of films available to watch on the box.

Here are tonight’s offerings.

Jarhead – Turner Classic Movies – 9pm

Our pick for this evening is from director Sam Mendes (Road to Perdition, Skyfall, 1917) and revolves around a young US marine (Jake Gyllenhaal) and his experience serving in the Gulf War.

Jarhead was a box-office disappointment upon release in 2005, perhaps because it focuses less on the battle scenes you typically see in war dramas and more on the emotional, mental and physical struggles of its young soldiers.

However, it’s this very quality that makes it a stand-out entry in its genre, alongside a typically intense central performance from Gyllenhaal and epic, gorgeous cinematography from Roger Deakins.

The Bourne Supremacy – RTÉ2 – 9pm

The second in the Bourne franchise.

Jason Bourne – Film4 – 9pm

Weirdly, the fifth in the Bourne franchise but the fourth to focus on Matt Damon’s titular assassin.

The Longest Yard – Comedy Central – 9pm

A remake of the ’70s prison sports comedy starring Adam Sandler.

Magnificent Obsession – True Movies – 9pm

An acclaimed ’50s melodrama from legendary filmmaker Douglas Sirk.

Benny and Joon – TG4 – 9.20pm

This ’90s romantic comedy tells the story of two eccentric individuals (Johnny Depp and Mary Stuart Masterson) who fall in love.

Central Intelligence – Channel 4 – 10.40pm

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and Kevin Hart star in this buddy action-comedy.

The Promise – RTÉ2 – 11pm

Set in the final years of the Ottoman Empire, this historical drama focuses on a love triangle between characters played by Charlotte Le Bon, Christian Bale and Oscar Isaac.

The Green Hornet – Comedy Central – 11.15pm

A decent superhero flick, notable for starring funnyman Seth Rogen.

Sabotage – Film4 – 11.25pm

This gritty, violent thriller from director David Ayer (Fury, Suicide Squad) sees Arnold Schwarzenegger play the leader of a DEA team whose members find themselves being hunted down after they steal money from a cartel raid.

The Light Between Oceans – BBC Two – 12.45am

In this drama from Blue Valentine director Derek Cianfrance, a lighthouse keeper (Michael Fassbender) and his wife (Alicia Vikander) living off the coast of Western Australia raise a baby they rescue from a drifting rowing boat.
