Our pick for tonight tells the story of King George VI, focusing on his impromptu ascension to the throne in 1936 and his experience seeing a speech therapist (Geoffrey Rush) to help him overcome his stammer.
Thanks to its emotional lead performance and heartwarming friendship at its centre, The King’s Speech is a real crowdpleaser.
If you need proof of that, it took home four Oscars at the 2010 Academy Awards including Best Actor for Firth and Best Picture, with the film beating classics like Black Swan, Inception and The Social Network in the latter category.
It’s Not Yet Dark – Virgin Media Three – 9pm
Narrated by Colin Farrell, this acclaimed documentary chronicles late Irish filmmaker Simon Fitzmaurice as he directs his debut feature after being diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease.
Venom – Film4 – 9pm
Tom Hardy plays a journalist who becomes bonded to a strange alien entity in this very flawed if occasionally quite fun flick.
Blades of Glory – Comedy Central – 9pm
Two rival Olympic ice skaters (Jon Heder and Will Ferrell) are forced to compete in the sport together in this decent comedy.

Known as The Harvest in some territories, this creepy chiller sees Michael Shannon and Samantha Morton play parents with a secret.
