With a new take on Batman in cinemas now and earning rave reviews, what better time is there to revisit the film that showed, through its ambitious screenplay and grittier take on its central caped crusader, that superhero movies could be more than just popcorn entertainment.
Mad Max 2 – ITV 4 – 9pm
Set in a post-apocalyptic Australian wasteland, this also legendary sequel sees the title character and cynical drifter (Mel Gibson) agree to help a small community escape a horde of bandits.
Alita: Battle Angel – Channel 4 – 9pm
Co-written by James Cameron (Avatar) and directed by Robert Rodriguez (Sin City), this fun futuristic action sci-fi boasts incredible special effects.
King Arthur: Legend of the Sword – Turner Classic Movies – 9pm
Guy Ritchie’s take on the legend starring Sons of Anarchy’s Charlie Hunnam.
Cop Car – Horror Channel – 9pm
Two young boys provoke the ire of a corrupt sheriff (a mustached Kevin Bacon) in this tense crime thriller.
The Elephant Man – Virgin Media Three – 9.15pm
Anthony Hopkins and John Hurt star in filmmaker David Lynch’s emotional biopic about the life of Joseph Merrick.
The Crying Game – TG4 – 9.20pm
Ireland’s Neil Jordan wrote and directed this incredible ’90s thriller about an IRA member (Stephen Rea) who forms an unexpected relationship with the lover of a British soldier the group kidnaps.
Burning – BBC Four – 10pm
Oscar-nominee Steven Yeun is among the cast of this slow burn South Korean thriller about a man who begins to suspect the new friend of his crush is bad news.
Dead Ringers – Horror Channel – 10.45pm
Jeremy Irons gives one of the best performances ever playing twin gynecologists who take full advantage of the fact that nobody can tell them apart until their relationship begins to deteriorate over a woman.
Horror legend David Cronenberg directs.
Vantage Point – RTÉ2 – 10.45pm
In this political action thriller, the attempted assassination of the American President is told and re-told from several different perspectives.
I Love You, Man – Comedy Central – 10.45pm
In this comedy, Paul Rudd plays a guy without friends who seeks a best man for his upcoming wedding.
Bram Stoker’s Dracula – Film4 – 11.15pm
Gary Oldman is Dracula in The Godfather director Francis Ford Coppola’s lavish adaptation of Bram Stoker’s legendary novel.
The Finest Hours – BBC One – 11.30pm
Chris Pine leads the cast of this historical drama chronicling the 1952 US Coast Guard rescue of the crew of SS Pendleton after the ship split apart during a storm off the New England coast.
Bridge of Spies – Channel 4 – 11.30pm
Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks reunited for this Cold War-set drama about an American lawyer recruited to defend an arrested Soviet spy (Mark Rylance, who won an Oscar for his role) in court.
The Lost Boys – Turner Classic Movies – 11.35pm
