Jeff Bridges leads a star-studded cast.
At long last, the weekend is here.
And if you’re staying in tonight, there’s a pretty good line-up of movies on telly.
Here’s your options for Friday, 25 March.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey – Film4 – 9pm
The first in the Lord of the Rings prequel trilogy.
Bad Samaritan – Horror Channel – 9pm
In this 2018 thriller, Robert Sheehan plays a parking valet who burglarises the houses of the drivers he services, only to discover one of his rich customers (David Tennant) is a serial killer.
Van Helsing – ITV4 – 9pm
Much maligned by critics upon release in 2004, this action-horror starring Hugh Jackman has its defenders.
Jack Reacher: Never Go Back – E4 – 9pm
A so-so sequel to a very solid first movie.
I Love You, Man – Comedy Central – 9pm
Paul Rudd plays a guy without friends who seeks a best man for his upcoming wedding in this buddy comedy.
Four Weddings and a Funeral – RTÉ2 – 9.35pm
The much-beloved romantic comedy.
True Grit – TG4 – 9.55pm
Set in the 19th century, our pick for tonight sees a stubborn teenager (Hailee Steinfeld) enlist the help of a tough US Marshal (Jeff Bridges) to track down her father’s murderer (Josh Brolin).
An adaptation of the novel of the same name – previously made into a movie in the ’60s with John Wayne in the lead role – this 2010 film from the Coen Brothers features crackling dialogue, gorgeous cinematography and incredible performances.
On top of the names mentioned above, the cast also includes Matt Damon, as well as our own Domhnall Gleeson.
The Mechanic – Virgin Media One – 10pm
An elite hitman (Jason Statham) teaches his trade to an apprentice (Ben Foster) who has a connection to one of his previous victims.
One of the better action flicks to star Statham, although it’s no Crank or Wrath of Man.
Amazing Grace – BBC Four – 10pm
This Aretha Franklin concert film has a near-perfect 99% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Spider-Man: Homecoming – BBC One – 10.35pm
The first solo film for Tom Holland’s take on the hero web-slinger.
Mr. Saturday Night – RTÉ One – 11.15pm
Billy Crystal directs and stars in this comedy-drama about the rise and fall of a stand-up comedian.
American Ultra – Channel 4 – 12.05am
This underrated action-comedy centres on a young stoner (Jesse Eisenberg) who discovers he was part of a secret government program and is a sleeper agent.
Kristen Stewart co-stars.
We Summon the Darkness – Film4 – 12.20am
Alexandra Daddario (The White Lotus) stars in this ’80s set horror-thriller.
