An underseen real-life Jake Gyllenhaal drama is among tonight’s movies on TV

Dave Hanratty

All hail movies.

Movies on TV, in particular.

It’s Good Friday.

You’re either out adventuring or couch-bound.

Maybe you’re doing something else, we don’t know.

Frankly? We don’t want to know.

Here’s the most intriguing cinematic options on YOUR television on Friday, 15 April…

Daddy’s Home – Film4 – 7.15pm

He sure is!

Daddy’s Home 2 – Comedy Central – 9pm

Back at it again!

V for Vendetta – Turner Classic Movies – 9pm

Remember, remember, the fifth of November.

Muddled but still very enjoyable – and still quite radical, really – vigilante sci-fi drama featuring a masked anti-hero and his wildly alliterative vocabulary skills.

Deadpool – Film4 – 9pm

The first one.

Maze Runner: The Scorch Trails – E4 – 9pm

The second one. I think.

Stronger – RTÉ 2 – 9.30pm

Our main choice this evening.

Jake Gyllenhaal stars as the real-life Jeff Bauman, a man trying to rebuild his life after losing both of his legs as a result of the Boston Marathon Bombing of 2013.

Released in 2017, Stronger was something of a box office flop, grossing just $8 million from a $30 million budget.

Critics, however, were mostly impressed, particularly by the performances – Gyllenhaal is very good here as he illustrates the complexities of trauma, but it’s Tatiana Maslany who steals the show as his girlfriend.

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel – BBC One – 10.40pm

Can it really be the best?

Cube – Film4 – 11.10pm

Respectable Euro-horror that finds a bunch of captives trapped within a series of killer cube-shaped rooms.

47 Ronin – Turner Classic Movies – 11.45pm

Samurai fantasy adventure with Keanu Reeves and Hiroyuki Sanada.

The Maltese Falcon – RTÉ 2 – 12.40am

Private eye Sam Spade gets himself embroiled in a dangerous murder-mystery.
