Movies & TV

08th Jul 2022

A bad but fun superhero flick is among the movies on TV tonight

Dave Hanratty

Man, it’s a hot one.

Hot out there today.

And it’s only going to get hotter in the days ahead.

You don’t want none of that, right? Nah. You want movies. On TV.

Here’s how it looks on Friday, 8 July…

Daddy’s Home – E4 – 9pm

You bet he is!

Daredevil – Film4 – 9pm

Our main pick this evening.

Many years before Charlie Cox put some Netflix-assisted respect on the name, Ben Affleck suited up as Matt Murdock; ace attorney and blind vigilante superhero.

Daredevil is very early-2000s in mostly bad ways but honestly? It’s kind of fun. Plus, you get a wild scenery-chewing performance from Colin Farrell as the villainous Bullseye.

Man of Steel – Turner Classic Movies – 9pm

A much less fun superhero movie.

John Wick: Chapter 2 – Virgin Media One – 9pm

Keanu Reeves kills many men.

Gothika – Horror Channel – 9pm

Halle Berry may or may not have killed someone. Perhaps a ghost did it? Who knows!

U.S. Marshals – ITV4 – 9.05pm

Sequel to The Fugitive. Not good.

The Old Man & The Gun – RTÉ 2 – 10.30pm

Screen legend Robert Redford announced his intention to retire following the completion of this 2018 crime film, although he would cameo in Avengers: Endgame the following year.

Here, he plays the real-life Forrest Tucker, career criminal and prison escape artist.

Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid – TG4 – 10.35pm

TG4 doing its ‘Friday Night Western’ thing.

Metal Heart – RTÉ One – 10.40pm

Romantic comedy set in Dublin about a pair of warring sisters.

Brightburn – Film4 – 11.05pm

The film that dares to ask ‘What if Superman but evil?’. It’s not great.

The Lost Boys – Turner Classic Movies – 11.55pm

Damned vampires.

Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials – Channel 4 – 12.10am

Hey remember when they just kept making boring young adult novel adaptations during the 2010s?

The Walker – RTÉ One – 12.25am

Drama in which Woody Harrelson plays a male escort who becomes a murder suspect.

Swordfish – Turner Classic Movies – 1.55am

Incredibly silly turn-of-the-century cyber-thriller with John Travolta, Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry, Don Cheadle and acting colossus Vinnie Jones.

Super 8 – Channel 4 – 2.20am

J.J. Abrams does his best impression of Steven Spielberg.

Bad Teacher – Virgin Media Two – 2.40am

Cameron Diaz in a racy comedy. Perfect for… almost three in the morning, cool.
