One of the most killer twists ever is among the movies on TV tonight

Dave Hanratty

Is it too hot for movies?

It just might be, you know.

And yet we carry on regardless, sifting through the TV listings to see what’s on this Monday evening, 11 July.

With that in mind, let’s take a look…

Lethal Weapon 2 – Turner Classic Movies – 9pm

The second one.

Commando – Film4 – 9pm

Arnie kills lots and lots and lots of villains while making ace one-liners.

Armageddon – ITV4 – 9pm

Bruce Willis leads a team of blue-collar workers who find themselves thrust into space with a mission to save the world. Ben Affleck, Liv Tyler, Steve Buscemi, Billy Bob Thornton and Aerosmith also feature.

Cop Car – Legend (formerly The Horror Channel) – 9pm

Kevin Bacon plays a cop. He has a car. His car is stolen. He chases after it. Only, the thieves may not be the real villains here…

American Assassin – TG4 – 9.30pm

Spy thriller in which a young man, who is indeed American, is trained for assassination purposes.

Dog Soldiers – Film4 – 10.50pm

A bunch of soldiers find themselves fighting off werewolves in rural Scotland.

From Dusk Till Dawn – Turner Classic Movies – 11.25pm

Our main pick for you tonight boasts one of the most shocking, out-of-nowhere twists ever seen.

Picture the scene. This writer is watching From Dusk Till Dawn on TV many, many years ago in a pre-social media era with zero knowledge of what the film was about. It sure seemed to be about criminals on the run from the law. And then, roughly an hour in… what the fuck?!

If you’re somehow unsure of what I’m referring to, good. Keep it that way. The basic plot sees the notorious Gecko brothers played by George Clooney (cool under pressure) and Quentin Tarantino (very much the opposite) desperately trying to flee from police after a botched robbery.

Having kidnapped a religious family (including Harvey Keitel and Juliette Lewis), they head to Mexico and a promised place of sanctuary that turns out to house something even more life-threatening than the authorities on their tail.

Captain Phillips – ITV4 – 12.05am

Tom Hanks gives an incredible performance in this true story of a dangerous ship-based hijacking.

Child 44 – Film4 – 1.05am

Chilly spy thriller with Tom Hardy.
