A new month. Perchance, some new movies?
Halloween is consigned to the scrap heap of history for yet another year. We move.
And we move into November, as is tradition. Also tradition – a rundown of the movies available via your terrestrial television screen of a given evening.
That evening is Tuesday, 1 November and the movies on offer are as follows…
The Greatest Showman – Film4 – 6.55 pm
Hugh Jackman does his song-and-dance thing. Audiences swoon.
Kenny Rogers: All in for the Gambler (A Farewell Concert Celebration) – TG4 – 9 pm
Another great showman? Live concert from Kenny Rogers, recorded in Nashville in 2017.
Jack Reacher: Never Go Back – Film4 – 9 pm
Mediocre sequel that suggests Tom Cruise should have taken the advice of the subtitle.
The Wall – Legend – 9 pm
John Cena and Aaron Taylor-Johnson play two soldiers pinned down in enemy territory by a deadly sniper.
Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy – Sky Showcase – 9 pm
Milk was a bad choice.
Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery – Comedy Central – 9 pm
Yeah baby!
Await Further Instructions – Legend – 10.50 pm
A family wake up on Christmas morning only to find they are trapped inside. A series of increasingly disturbing instructions soon arrive via the TV set.
His House – BBC Two – 11.20 pm
Halloween is indeed over so you may not want to engage with scary films anymore but we think you should give our pick of the evening a chance.
Previously available on Netflix, 2020’s His House is a pretty intense mix of the horror, thriller and drama genres, with superb performances from Sope Dirisu (who you’ll recognise from Gangs of London, if you’re a fan), Wunmi Mosaku (Loki, We Own This City) and Matt Smith (House of the Dragon, the only good thing in Morbius).
It tells the story of a couple who have escaped from Sudan, now trying to establish a life for themselves in London, only to run into a series of obstacles – including what may be a great evil lurking within their new home.
An intelligent, thoughtful and genuinely unsettling film.
Nuns on the Run – Film4 – 11.20 pm
Or if you’d prefer something completely different and the chance to appreciate the comic timing of the late Robbie Coltrane, he teams up here with Eric Idle as a pair of small-time crooks who find that religion comes in handy as they seek to escape the law and the mob.
Lethal Weapon 4 – Turner Classic Movies – 11.35 pm
The fourth one.
Mona Lisa – Film4 – 1.10am
Acclaimed crime drama with the great Bob Hoskins.
Regression – Channel 4 – 2.10 am
Psychological thriller featuring Ethan Hawke, Emma Watson and your tired eyes.
