One of the best reviewed superhero films in recent years is among the movies on TV tonight

Stephen Porzio

It received a 90% Rotten Tomatoes score and inspired a TV spin-off.

Need a movie or two to watch tonight?

Well, there are plenty airing on the telly this Monday evening (2 January).

The following are your options.

The Suicide Squad – Sky Showcase – 9pm

Our pick for tonight is this standalone sequel to 2016’s Suicide Squad which was written and directed by James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy).

It revolves around a handful of prisoners, including Bloodsport (Idris Elba), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) and Peacemaker (John Cena), who agree to take part in a mysterious and dangerous mission on a South American island in exchange for shortened sentences.

A vast improvement on the much-maligned original, The Suicide Squad earned rave reviews upon its release in 2021 – with critics praising its new and returning cast, its anarchic humour and its action-packed set-pieces, particularly its
kaiju movie-inspired climax.

The film received a 90% score on Rotten Tomatoes and also inspired the excellent superhero spin-off series Peacemaker starring Cena.

The Wall – Legend – 9pm

John Cena stars again, this time in a war thriller as one of two American soldiers trapped by an Iraqi sniper.

R.I.P.D. – Comedy Central – 9pm

Jeff Bridges as an Old West lawman working for an “afterlife law enforcement department” is the best part of this action-comedy comic book adaptation that was a flop with critics and at the box office.

Bad Boys – Film4 – 9pm

“Bad boys, bad boys, whatcha gonna do?”

The Man From U.N.C.L.E. – Turner Classic Movies – 9pm

A fun and stylish movie adaptation of the old spy series from director Guy Ritchie.

The Inbetweeeners 2 – E4 – 9pm

The inbetweeners meet up again for a holiday in Australia.

Death Wish – Virgin Media One – 9pm

In this remake, Bruce Willis steps into Charles Bronson’s shoes as a family man out for revenge.

Spectre – RTÉ One – 9.30pm

One of the lesser Daniel Craig bonds.

Foscadh – TG4 – 9.30pm

This Irish-language drama has a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Our pick for tonight is 2021’s The Suicide Squad

A Bump Along the Way – RTÉ2 – 9.35pm

Bronagh Gallagher (The Commitments) stars in this Northern Irish comedy-drama that also has a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score.

Romeo + Juliet – BBC Two – 10pm

Claire Danes and Leonardo DiCaprio star in this modernised adaptation of William Shakespeare’s tragedy.

The Shawshank Redemption – BBC One – 10.30pm

This Stephen King adaptation is the best movie of all time according to IMDB.

Cell – Horror Xtra – 10.50pm

John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson star in this sci-fi horror and much-less successful Stephen King adaptation.

Hellboy II: The Golden Army – ITV4 – 11pm

Guillermo del Toro’s superhero sequel is maybe even better than the already great original.

Drive Angry – Comedy Central – 11pm

Nicolas Cage plays John Milton, a man who escapes from Hell with Satan’s gun, the Godkiller, to kill a cult leader who murdered his daughter and kidnapped her baby.

While you’ll probably start watching this for Cage, you’ll keep watching it for William Fichtner’s incredible performance as Satan’s dry and arrogant assistant assigned to return Milton to hell.

Arkansas – Film4 – 11.20pm

Clark Duke and Liam Hemsworth lead an ensemble cast in this pleasantly character-driven and twisty 2020 crime thriller.

The Lighthorsemen – Turner Classic Movies – 11.25pm

An Australian World War I drama based on true events.
