Last but not least is our pick for tonight which takes place in the 1930s at an English country house where a number of wealthy people, some of which are joined by their servants, gather for a shooting weekend.
However, it isn’t long before a murder occurs at the property, with the movie going on to present the investigation that ensues from both the guests’ and servants’ perspectives.
Directed by one of the greatest filmmakers of all time Robert Altman (Images, M*A*S*H, Nashville) and written by Julian Fellowes (who would later go on to create Downton Abbey), 2001’s Gosford Park doubles as both a gripping and playful whodunit and a powerful dissection of the UK’s rigid class structure.
Its ensemble cast is also phenomenal, including Charles Dance, Clive Owen, Derek Jacobi, Emily Watson, Helen Mirren, Jeremy Northam, Kelly Macdonald, Kristin Scott Thomas, Maggie Smith, Michael Gambon, Richard E. Grant, Stephen Fry and plenty more recognisable faces.
Gosford Park holds an 87% Rotten Tomatoes score and was nominated for seven Oscars, with Fellowes winning Best Original Screenplay.
