Kick off the start of your weekend with a movie night!
A pretty decent selection of films to enjoy on your Friday evening in, starting with…
Kingsman: The Golden Circle – E4 – 9pm
The sequel is nowhere near as good as the original, but Julianne Moore is clearly having a ball as the too-nice world destroyer.
Game Night – BBC Three – 9pm
We recently wrote about this painfully underseen comedy gem on its fifth anniversary. Tonight is as good a night as any to give it the love it deserves.
The Departed – FilmFour – 9pm
Listen, we know that Leonardo DiCaprio is a great actor, and his CV is littered with some incredible performances. He did eventually win the Best Actor Oscar for his role in The Revenant, following four previous nominations (and another one since). But one movie he did not get nominated for was The Departed, which we reckon is his best ever performance.
Every scene reveals the pure psychological anguish his character is under, a double agent for the FBI buried deep within Jack Nicholson’s mob. Scorsese stacks the deck with amazing actors giving career-best performances, but DiCaprio has never felt more vital than right here.
The Departed is also available to rent on Rakuten TV and Apple TV.
About Time – RTÉ2 – 9.30pm
You will absolutely cry your eyes out at this rom-com about a man who can time travel (Domhnall Gleeson) and the woman he falls in love with (Rachel McAdams), but its really about that man and his dad (Bill Nighy), who can also time travel.
Green Book – RTÉ One – 9.35pm
A controversial Best Picture Oscar winner, with a black musician (Mahershala Ali) hiring a white driver (Viggo Mortensen) for a road trip through parts of America, facing racial tensions at every step of the way.
Yesterday – BBC One – 10.40pm
A decent enough rom-com, with a busker (Himesh Patel) waking up one day to discover he’s the only person in the world with any memory of The Beatles existing.
Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa – Comedy Central – 11pm
More pranks than stunts, but still the same kind of comedy you’d know from the other Jackass movies that you either already love or hate.
Significant Other – FilmFour – 12am
An entertaining horror with a young couple (Maika Monroe and Jake Lacy) taking a trip through the woods, only to discover there is something hunting them.
Snatched – Channel 4 – 12.10am
Amy Schumer and Goldie Hawn play daughter and mother on holiday together who get caught up in a kidnapping scheme. Not the best comedy ever, but Schumer and Hawn make for a good duo.
Ben Is Back – BBC Two – 12.50am
Julia Roberts headlines this drama about a mother who is suddenly reunited with her drug addicted teenage son (Lucas Hedges).
