A hilarious black comedy flick is among the movies on TV tonight

Simon Kelly

It’s got an incredible ensemble cast.

If you’re thinking of having a lazy Bank Holiday Monday, we honestly don’t blame you. The perfect accompaniment, of course, of said lazy day would be a great film or two and luckily there’s some excellent movies on TV tonight.

So plant yourself on the couch this evening and chill out before the week starts up again. Here are your choices for tonight…

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince – ITV2 – 6pm

Arguably the best of the Harry Potter series (A close tie with The Prisoner of Azkaban, in this writer’s opinion), sees Harry in a gloomier light than ever before. Balancing the dark material throughout the film, there’s some brilliant moments of comedy brought about by the excellent Jim Broadbent as Prof Slughorn.

Loophole – Great! Movies – 6.50pm

Martin Sheen stars in this not-very-good crime drama about an architect who becomes involved in a daring bank heist.

My Best Friend’s Wedding – Film Four – 6.55pm

Julia Roberts, Dermot Mulroney, Cameron Diaz, and Rupert Everett star in this classic rom-com about a woman who tries to sabotage the love of her life’s wedding.

Rambo: First Blood Part II – ITV4 – 9pm

One day without a Rambo film on TV, that’s all I ask, will never happen.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle – Film Four – 9pm

Set 22 years after the events of the 1995 film, the third instalment of the Jumanji franchise stars Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan. It’s surprisingly decent, too.

The Death of Stalin – TG4 – 9.30pm

Our pick of the movies on TV this evening comes from from The Thick of It creator and all-round comedy genius Armando Iannucci.

This excellent black comedy depicts the social and political power struggle that emerges in the Soviet Union following the death of its leader Joseph Stalin in 1953 and boasts an incredible ensemble cast including Jason Isaacs, Steve Buscemi, Michael Palin and Paddy Considine.

After its release, it gained huge opposition from Russia and was labelled “anti-Russian propaganda” for allegedly mocking the USSR and Soviet Union.

Knives Out – RTÉ One – 9.30pm

Glass Onion took last Christmas by storm as the follow up to this excellent mystery-comedy from Rian Johnson.

With an absolutely stacked cast including Daniel Craig the exuberant Benoit Blanc alongside Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, Michael Shannon, Don Johnson, Toni Collette and LaKeith Stanfield, Knives Out is a sharp, witty and entertaining romp.

Entebbe – BBC Two – 11.15pm

2018 thriller starring Rosamund Pike and Daniel Brühl which recounts the story of Operation Entebbe, a 1976 counter-terrorist hostage-rescue operation.

The Road – Great! Movies – 11.15pm

One of the bleakest movies of all time, but also very good. Based on Cormac McCarthy’s novel of the same name, The Road stars Viggo Mortensen and Kodi Smit-McPhee as a father and son traversing across a post-apocalyptic wasteland.

Kingsman: The Secret Service – Film Four – 11.20pm

The first and best of the Kingsman film series stars Taron Egerton as rebellious teen Eggsy, who is recruited by Harry Hart (Colin Firth) into a secret spy organisation.

The Wedding Guest – Great! Movies – 1.30am

Action thriller starring Dev Patel as a mysterious man travelling throughout Pakistan and India.

Funny Cow – Film Four – 1.55am

Underrated British film starring Maxine Peake as a female comedian attempting to break onto the comedy circuit in northern England.
