Brazil 4-1 Czechoslovakia (1970)

The date was 3 June 1970. The place was Estadio Jalisco, Guadalajara. The player was Jairzinho.

Many World Cup wonder goals have come from Brazilians. Pelé, Ronaldo, Romário and Zico are mentioned in the same breath when the talk strikes up about Samba strikers.

But what about Brazil’s seventh all-time top scorer Jairzinho’s goal on Day Four of Mexico ’70?

Brazil memorably won the World Cup with a flamboyant and scintillating side which we will probably never see the likes of ever again. A 4-1 mauling of Italy in the final summed up what was a stylish and exciting journey through the tournament which was held for the first time in North America.

Jairzinho was a dynamic and vital component in the Brazilian side which swept the board in all six games. His second goal in their opening game against Czechoslovakia is one that will live long in the memory. A mazy run, beating three players, and the ‘keeper from an angle, is JOE’s highlight of Day Four at the World Cup.
