Science at work…
How comfortable are you standing on one leg? Scientists believe that your ability to stand on one leg could be a strong indicator of how susceptible you are for potentially suffering a stroke.
Researchers from the University of Tokyo asked more than 1,300 people with an average age of 67 to stand on one leg with their eyes open for as long as they could.
According to the findings, those who had trouble standing on one leg for 20 seconds or longer did worse on tests evaluating cognitive function.
i100 reports, “There was also an increased prevalence among this group of cerebral small vessel disease or minute haemorrhages associated with a higher risk of strokes.”
Speaking about the research, study lead Yasuharu Tabara said: “One-leg standing time is a simple measure of postural instability and might be a consequence of the presence of brain abnormalities.”
