For all of you who drink from the same bottle everyday…
A handy way of ensuring you stay hydrated is to carry around a water bottle, it acts as a gentle reminder to drink water frequently throughout the day.
But according to new research from treadmillreviews, your water bottle is absolutely filthy, and could potentially be making you sick.
The researchers swabbed the lids of reusable water bottles used by athletes and tested the samples in an independent lab to find out the levels of bacteria on the bottles. The results are rather disgusting.
Results showed the average water bottle had 313,499 CFU (colony-forming units) per square centimetre. To put that into perspective, the average pet’s toy has about 2,937CFU/sq cm.
So it would be more hygienic for you to lick your dog’s toy, rather than drink from your reusable water bottle.
Here’s a breakdown of the bacteria on different types of bottle…

The germ riddled bottles are caused by a lack of washing with many people refilling their bottles numerous times without rinsing them thoroughly or running them through the dishwasher.
This is rather alarming when you consider that 60% of the germs found by researchers in this study can make a person sick.
So do yourself a favour, wash that bottle you filthy animal.
