According to the country’s leading health expert, cutbacks in healthcare is likely to see a rise in cancer cases throughout Ireland over the next 20 years.
Cancer cases could increase dramatically between now and 2030 and people who currently suffer from the disease may miss out on life-savings drugs thanks to the cuts in our healthcare service. That could be the case if we believe the advice coming from Professor John Crown, a consultant oncologist at St Vincent’s Hospital in Dublin.
His advice comes after the World Cancer Research Fund predicted that cancer cases in Ireland could increase by 72 per cent by 2030. Prof Crown admitted that these stark figures are “very plausible”. Scary stuff we think you’ll agree.
“I would be dishonest if I didn’t say I was a little worried that there have been a few hints there may be change, specifically in the availability of anti-cancer drugs. There are clear hints that this is an area that may be targeted at a time of cutbacks,” Prof Crown told the Irish Examiner.
However, Prof Crown also stressed that there was no evidence that any deaths have been caused as a result of the cutbacks.
So what do you think? If the World Cancer Research Fund figures are to be believed, then are cutbacks to healthcare services the best bet? Or is there even a choice?
