Belly’s gonna get ya.
New research suggests that having a lot of fat on the midriff of an other-wise normal-sized body is worse for you than being ‘well-insulated’ all over.
A large study of over 15,000 Americans showed that those who were disproportionately big around the tummy actually had worse survival rates than those who were actually obese or overweight.
The study, published in today’s Annals of Internal Medicine, was conducted over 14 years, and showed that men with big bellies on otherwise regular bodies fared especially badly compared to those whose bodies were proportionate.
Having a lot of weight around the belly is associated with ‘visceral fat’, which is especially deleterious to the internal organs. Having a lot of visceral fat tends to bring about conditions like diabetes, higher levels of cholesterol and inflammation.

We think the message to take away from this is that it’s worth trying your best to maintain a healthy weight as opposed to aiming to be fat all over.
