You can’t argue with the fats facts.
The message about the obesity problem in Ireland is one that has been delivered often in recent years, but have you ever wondered how we, pardon the pun, ‘shape up’ compared to the rest of the world?
That question has been answered in a study by Clinic Compare using data from the CIA’s World Factbook and it shows that while we’re certainly not the worst country in the world when it comes to obesity, our position isn’t exactly healthy either.
The colour-coded graph tallies with recent figures showing that approximately 25% of Irish people (1 in 4 are obese), which is also the case in large parts of Europe as well as Australia.
It’ll hardly come as a surprise to learn that the figure is higher in the USA (approximately 30%) while the countries with the highest levels of obesity are located in the Pacific Islands (American Samoa – 74.6%, Nauru – 71.1% and The Cook Islands – 63.4%).
Food for thought, eh?
