It looks like Ireland is starting to have an effect on the Danish banking system, but it’s their sperm banks that are getting a good old battering… ironically.
As the euro tumbles steadily down and the Danish krone gets stronger, there is second type of banking system that is being affected by the current economic climate – the Danish sperm banking system.
According to a report in todays Sunday Independent, Denmark currently supplies almost all of Ireland’s sperm donations. Business is booming for the sperm banks in Denmark, which is unsurprising, really, could you imagine what their nurses look like?
However, our poor currency is making it more expensive for Irish couples looking to purchase sperm. The sperm business is worth hundreds of thousands of euro a year and the Sims Dublin clinic imports over US$100,000 worth of sperm per year. However, there has recently been a slump in sales.
It’s not just the sperm banks that are feeling the pressure either. The banks… ‘producers’ or ‘depositors’ are also finding themselves out of pocket. That’s because in Denmark, blokes are given as much as $400 per viable sample. When you include other factors such as a non-anonymous donation, donors can expect to walk away with up to $700 per sample.
