Macho, macho man, I want to be a macho man…
The college year has just commenced as students across Ireland enjoy their new-found freedom, hilariously pretend to like their new roommates, and start partying studying religiously every night.
They say that a healthy body leads to a healthy mind, so we’ve decided to look at some practical – and some slightly odd – ways that you can stay fit in college without spending an absolute fortune.
1) Join the college team
Simple and straightforward but it’s an effective way of staying fit, enjoying your sport and making some new mates.
JOE instantly became a college hero in our first few weeks because, over the space of a single weekend, we scored the winning point in our Sigerson Cup match, saved a last-minute penalty against our college rivals, AND we scored a try in the rugby match to win the rugby league thingy.
Believe us, we were college legends, just like Frank the Tank in Old School…

2) Take up a new sport
They say that college is beneficial in terms of opening young minds to new experiences, so why not try something a little out of your comfort zone? Incidentally, we always imagined the comfort zone to be a cushioned room with pillows, soft chairs and marshmallows.
Rock climbing, trampolining and ultimate Frisbee are just some of the super societies that you wouldn’t be able to avail of in your secondary school so why not give them a go?
Trust us, performing mime to a crowd of three people and a dog with the the theatre society just isn’t as much fun.
Anyone for slam dunks with trampolines?

3) Work out in your bedroom
Most campus college bedrooms are so small that they resemble a prison cell, so why not conform to every prison movie cliché and get yourself absolutely ripped.
Press ups, sit ups, crunches, planks, steps, squats can all be performed in relatively tight spaces so you really do have no excuse, unless you have a roommate who might feel a bit weird with you exercising in front of them.
Awkward.
Do this routine and you never know, you may end up ripped like this man…

4) Seven minute abs
If you can spare €20 from your drinking money shopping fund then an ab roller is a sound investment.

5) Chasing/Tag
We don’t care how old you are because a game of chasing (or Tag depending on what you call it) is still great craic.
Then again, being chased by the campus security guards because you weren’t allowed to be passed out on the football pitch at 7am isn’t quite as much fun.
If you can run like this then it’s grand.

6) Any of the following ‘student’ activities
Walking to college, lifting the remote control, putting the pizza boxes/empty bottles in the bins, running to the bar, choosing a seat at the front of the lecture hall (so many steps) and the most important of all… breaking a mental sweat.

One thing you won’t be sweating about though is your financial situation because with Bank of Ireland you get 20% off* lots of brands when you use your student Visa Debit card, check out their website for more details by clicking here.
